Money vs Abundance: Understanding the Difference Through Energy and Chakras
Money and Abundance Are Not the Same
Money and abundance are often used as if they mean the same thing. But they are not. They are connected, yet they arise from different internal centres and respond to different needs within us. From my perspective, both personally and in my work as a therapist, understanding this distinction can bring a great deal of clarity to how we relate to security, pleasure, and fulfilment.
Money and the Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Money is deeply linked to our most basic needs. In modern society, we cannot live without it. It is directly connected to survival: having a home, access to food, clothing, and stability. Energetically, this reflects the first chakra, Muladhara, the root centre. This centre is associated with:
safety
grounding
stability
survival
When our relationship with money is unstable, it often reflects a deeper sense of insecurity or lack of safety within the system. This is why financial stress can feel so intense. It is not just about numbers. It is about survival.
Abundance and the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
Abundance, on the other hand, operates differently. It is not limited to survival. Abundance is the capacity to attract and experience resources that enrich life beyond basic needs. This can include creativity, opportunities, relationships, ideas, inspiration, and moments of pleasure or flow. This type of energy resonates more closely with the second chakra, Svadhisthana, which is linked to creativity, expression, and emotional flow. Here, life is not only about surviving.
It is about experiencing.
Why You Can Have One Without the Other
One of the most interesting observations is that these two energies do not always move together. Some people have financial stability but feel empty, blocked, or disconnected from joy. Others may feel abundant in creativity, relationships, or inspiration, yet struggle financially. This is where the distinction becomes important. It allows us to see that:
money and abundance are related, but not identical
different internal blocks may affect each one
healing requires understanding where the imbalance lies
Emotional Blocks Around Money and Abundance
When there is imbalance, it is often not only practical, but emotional. A difficulty with money may reflect fear, insecurity, or lack of grounding. A difficulty with abundance may reflect restriction around pleasure, creativity, or receiving. From a therapeutic perspective, these patterns are not random. They are often shaped by:
early experiences
beliefs about worth and value
relational dynamics
unconscious conditioning
Becoming aware of these patterns is the first step toward change.
Releasing Fear from Security
For many people, money is not just about stability. It becomes intertwined with fear. Fear of not having enough. Fear of losing what has been built. Fear of not being able to survive or cope. This is where security becomes fragile. Instead of feeling grounded, it becomes something we chase, protect, or worry about constantly.
From a therapeutic perspective, true security does not come only from external circumstances. It is also internal. If the nervous system does not feel safe, no amount of money will fully remove the sense of insecurity. There will always be something else to worry about, something else to control. This is why some people can have financial stability and still feel anxious, while others with fewer resources may feel more at ease. The difference lies in the relationship with safety.
Releasing fear from security does not mean ignoring practical needs. It means separating survival from constant internal threat. It means gradually teaching the body that safety is not only dependent on external conditions, but can also be experienced internally. This process often begins with small moments of awareness.
Noticing when fear arises. Recognising when the mind moves into worst-case scenarios. Gently bringing attention back to the present moment. Over time, this creates a different foundation. Security becomes less about control, and more about trust. Not blind trust, but a grounded sense that you can meet what arises, rather than constantly anticipating what might go wrong.
And from that place, your relationship with money begins to change. Not because circumstances immediately shift, but because the internal experience of safety becomes more stable.
How to Unblock Abundance (Emotional and Energetic Work)
Unblocking abundance is not only about changing external circumstances. It begins internally. From both an emotional and energetic perspective, abundance flows more easily when there is less resistance within the system. This does not mean forcing positivity or trying to “manifest” from the mind. It means creating space.
Space to feel. Space to receive. Space to allow life to move through you without constant contraction.
This process often involves reconnecting with the body, becoming aware of where tension or restriction is held, and gently allowing those areas to soften over time. It also includes becoming more conscious of the beliefs and narratives that shape your relationship with receiving, pleasure, and expansion. Abundance is not something we chase. It is something we allow. And the more we feel safe, grounded, and open within ourselves, the more naturally that flow begins to emerge.
Moving Towards Balance
Balance comes from recognising both dimensions. We need money to feel safe and stable. We need abundance to feel alive and fulfilled. When both centres are supported, something shifts. There is less tension around survival, and more openness to receiving, creating, and engaging with life. The process is not about forcing change, but about becoming aware of where energy is blocked and allowing it to move more freely. You might begin by asking yourself:
Where do I feel more flow in my life, in money or in abundance? And where do I feel more restriction? These questions are not meant to judge, but to observe. Because within that observation, there is already the beginning of realignment. Money and abundance are not opposing forces. They are complementary, a marriage between feminine and masculine energy.
One grounds us in reality. The other expands our experience of life. Learning to relate to both consciously is part of creating a more balanced and integrated way of living.
